Geomeun Oreum Heritage Village
- Theme: [Heritage Preservation] Natural
Heritage & Ecotourism
- Description of Field
Jeju is a volcanic
island located south of the Korean peninsula. The
island of Jeju was formed from volcanic activities
approximately 1.2million years ago, creating Mt.
Halla. This mountain towers 1,950 meters above sea
level at the center of the island, alongside numerous
oreums(parasitic volcanic cones) scattered around
the entire island. The World Heritage Ceneter(WHC)
inducted “Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes”
into the World Natural Heritage list, Korea’s first
such registration on June 27, 2007. The Geomeun
Oreum Heritage Village has experienced drastic
change since 2008 when the Geomun Oreum lava tube
system in the area was recognized and identified
by the government as a potential tourist attraction.
With the World Heritage Center construction and
increasing tour visits, the village is interested
in building eco-tourism in the area. Besides the
prominence of small self-sufficient agricultural
work, activity in the village centers on the heritage
site. Participants will be involved in supporting
the activities of Geomeun Oreum Heritage Information
Center, multicultural events in village summer schools
and agricultural work in fields. - Meeting Point: Jeju International Airport
